Blog Post #46- Adding Transitions in to The Film

The next step of my films editing is to add transitions to my film. The reason for this is because if all my cuts were just straight cuts it would reduce the quality of my film. To fix this, I had to look at the selection of transitions available within iMovie to see what would fit in with my film.

Within iMovie, there are 6 types of transitions available. These transitions are the normal straight cut, theme, dissolve, slide, wipe, and fade. Within my film, I had to make some choices on which transitions to pick so I tested out each transition to see which one would fit in the best with my project. As a result of this testing, I realized that the dissolve transition would work best within my film when there are scenes that are showing a skip in time. I picked the dissolve for this instead of the fade transition because I feel like the fade transition would work better for parts where there is a completely new scene occurring rather than a time skip within a scene that has the same elements as the previous scene that was shown. Since I do have some changes in scenes I decided to use the fade to black a couple of times  but much less than the dissolve transition.

Within my film, the dissolve transitions are used between shots such as Alex opening the door for his friends and then being in the living room with his friends. Dissolves are also used for scenes that show a character walking to then showing where they walked to. This is used to reduce the filler time that would've been added by showing the whole walking scene. The instances of a fade to black will occur when a larger time skip is occurring, such as the time skip of a few months from Alex partying to now being an improved individual with different friends. This fade to black will fade to a black screen with text that informs the audience on how much time has passed from the first scene to the next scene.

These transitions will allow the passage of time within my film to make more sense to the audience and will make the film look more appealing to the audience then just straight cuts.
