Blog Post #33- Script Research
Any film needs a script for the purpose of providing dialogue for actors to say and to briefly describe scenes for actors to know how to say certain lines. Since I am making a short film, I realized that I needed to do some research on coming of age film scripts to have an idea of what my script should look like for my film so that my film is entertaining and not confusing to the audience.
I chose to look at the script for a film known as "I Saw the TV Glow" that is about 2 teenagers (Owen and Maddy) who learn to discover who they really are through a tv show known as The Pink Opaque in the film. Within the script, there are the basic elements such as the line that states the setting and the character dialogue which is categorized by the character who will state the lines provided for dialogue. Descriptions of what is occurring within the scenes is also present to allow the script to not only be dialogue but to provide context for when this dialogue is used. Within the script for this film I noticed dialogue from Maddy that stated "I said to myself, "This isn't normal." "This isn't normal." "This isn't how life is supposed to feel."" This stuck out to me because this dialogue shows that Maddy has came to the realization that she is not pleased with her current life and wants to make a change to her life that will please her. This dialogue is a good representation of the type of dialogue that would be present in a coming of age film.
After looking into this script for a film that is within the same genre as my film I learned about what I should be including within my script such as context for actors and meaningful dialogue to invoke emotions within the audience. Something that I could include within my film could be the main character having dialogue such as "what should I do" or "I need to make a change, I know this isn't right" for the purpose of representing the type of thoughts that went through the characters mind while he was thinking about his decisions.
