Blog Post #19- Score Research

When watching a film, the audience may realize that the dialogue coming from the characters is not the only thing that is currently producing audio. This is because most films usually contain some sort of background music that is used for the purpose of invoking certain emotions within the audience. This background music is also known as score. Since I want to make my film have appeal to the audience I need to include score usage to make the film more meaningful to the audience.

After researching score I found out about multiple forms of score and their effects on the film and the audience. The first type of score that I found out about is suspenseful score. This is score that is used for the purpose of building up suspense and excitement for an event within the audience. The second type of score that I found out about with my research is ambient score. Ambient score is calm background music that is used for the purpose of establishing a deeper meaning of what is currently going on in the film to the audience and it allows the audience to pay more attention to what is occurring as well. The third type of score that I researched is classical score. This is score that is used for the purpose of dramatizing certain events within a film. There is also score that is very energetic which is usually used during scenes where parties are occurring. This is used for the purpose of establishing the party environment and making the party seem more realistic because a normal party usually contains energetic music.

After commencing this research on score I had to come to a decision on some forms of score that I may use throughout my short film. I will be using ambient score within my short film for the purpose of putting emphasis on the emotions experienced by the main character when thinking about his future. I may also use ambient score near the end of my film as well during the new equilibrium when the main character has surrounded him self with better influences. I will be using energetic score during the start of my short film to make the scene more realistic. This is because the start of my short film will show the main character and his initial friends having a small party at the main characters home. I do not think that classical score or suspenseful score will be implemented into my final project. This is because I think that different types of score could help scenes communicate the message of the film better than if I used score that was suspenseful or classical.
