Blog Post #18- Stereotypes and How They Will Be Used Within My Film

 Within media products, there is almost always some sort of stereotype represented within the characters which is recognizable by the audience. This is also further explored within Stuart Halls representation theory that defines multiple stereotypes. Coming of age genres usually implement certain stereotypes within their films as well just like other films. 

Within coming of age genre films teenagers are usually represented as young individuals who do not know right from wrong which usually causes bad decisions to be made while at this young age. This stereotype also gives adults the stereotype that they make better decisions than teenagers because they are seen as more mature and have more responsibility which makes them have to make decisions that have thought behind them. Another stereotype that is also used within the coming of age genre is the idea that most individuals such as teenagers can think about their actions and start to mature when they consider the effects that their actions may have.

After researching these common stereotypes within coming of age genre films, I needed to consider how I will implement these stereotypes to make my film fully fit the coming of age genre and have recognizable stereotypes to the audience. I do not think that I will be implementing the stereotype that adults are more responsible and mature within my film due to the lack of adult characters in my film. This is due to the fact that my film will focus more on the main characters own decisions and self discovery rather than taking advice from an adult. The stereotype that teenagers make incorrect decisions will be implemented in my film. This implementation will happen mainly at the start of the film when the main character is making bad choices with his initial friends because they are not fully thinking about the negative effects that their actions may have. I will also be using the stereotype that teenagers can change their actions and make more responsible choices because of the maturation being expressed within my film. This is shown in my film with the thought process of the main character which then leads him to make better choices regarding his actions.
