Blog Post #17- Editing Techniques
Within any film there is always more than just one scene because a film would be very unentertaining with only one scene. When a producer is showing these different scenes there has to be some transition in between these scenes which is where editing techniques come in to play. My film will require the usage of certain editing techniques to connect all my scenes together and to maximize the quality of my film.
To have an idea of what type of editing techniques I could use for my film I had to do some research. After commencing my research I found out information about multiple different editing techniques that are commonly used within films. The first cut that I researched is the normal straight cut. A straight cut is just when the scene changes without any special effects and is the standard type of cut used in practically every film. Continuity editing is another technique where an individual is shown while doing something such as drinking a drink. If they are in the next shot, using continuity editing makes sure that when the individual is shown again they are still either drinking the drink or have the drink in their hand which shows the audience that the action being committed is shown accurately. A fade to black transition is when a scene comes to an end and the screen becomes black. This is used to emphasize to the audience the fact that something new is going to occur within the film and that the previous scene has ended. A jump cut is a cut that shows a time skip from an action starting to occur to the end of the action once the character has carried through with the action. This type of cut is used within films for the purpose of not including unnecessary time usage within the film.
After commencing this research I needed to decide if these techniques could be implemented into my film and how exactly they could be implemented. I realized that I could probably implement all the techniques that I researched into my film. The straight cut could be used in my film as the standard transition between shots to signify to the audience that something new is being shown in the film. Continuity editing can be used within my film to show actions committed by the characters in my film with more accuracy so it can be less confusing for the audience to understand what is going on in the film. A fade to black could be used within my film after the main character makes his decision on what he is going to do regarding who he surrounds himself with to signify to the audience that a decision has been made and that something is going to occur. Jump cuts will also be used within my film to reduce time from the film that is not needed and can be perceived by the audience without showing the full action such as the main character travelling to his bedroom after his friends leave.
