Blog Post #9- Theme research and decision

Within short films, a theme is always expressed for the purpose of conveying a message to the audience or teaching the audience. Since I chose a short film for my project, I knew that some sort of theme will have to be developed for the purpose of improving the quality of my short film and making it more meaningful to the audience.

To solidify my theme that I mentioned earlier in my first blog, I had to do some research on themes that are expressed within short films. When researching, I learned about multiple themes that are expressed within short films commonly. The first one I learned about was themes of love. I learned that in short films love is shown in many different ways and some short films present the message to the audience that love has many obstacles and is a long journey. Another theme that I learned about was perseverance. This research on perseverance led me to the conclusion that some short films convey the message to the audience that never giving up can lead to reaching goals and overcoming any obstacles that an individual may have. The third theme that I learned about was themes of friendship within short films. I found out that short films sometimes represent the message that having real friends that care for someone can lead to happiness and can cure loneliness.

After this research, I decided that my short film can also convey a theme regarding the benefits of friendship. The message being conveyed from the theme of friendship would be similar to what I stated above which revolves around the idea that friendship can lead to happiness when those friends are real friends that care about others. This will be expressed within my short film when the main character surrounds himself with better friends and comes to the realization that he feels happier with his friends who actually care about him and want him to be on a good path. The main theme of my short film that I defined in my first blog is the idea that people are influenced and act like the people they surround themselves with. I decided to retain this theme because it allows me to portray the message that I want to convey to the audience through my short film. I would also like to develop a theme regarding peer pressure within my short film. This theme will be developed through the early stages of my short film when the main character hangs out with the wrong crowd. I want to portray the characters so called "friends" forcing him to make a bad decision that he does not want to make. This usage then allows me to show the audience that if someone hangs out with people who make bad choices it can then lead to them being heavily influenced to make similar choices.
