Blog Post #8- Preliminary Exercise

When making a short film it is always important to have some prior knowledge and practice so you can have an easier time with filming. I recognized this which led to me to practice shots within clips that may be used within my film.

The first shot was a tracking shot that showed an actor walking through a hallway from the back. This shot shows the audience the movements of the actor and shows the audience where the character is going. I chose to practice this shot because it is a very common shot used within films and I may use it within my short film.

My second shot that I made was a panning shot that panned the camera to 2 individuals having a conversation. This shot moves the camera towards certain elements of films for the purpose of showing the audience details that may be important to the progression of the storyline within the film. I chose to create this excerpt of the shot because pan shots are under consideration as one of the shots that I will use within my film to show important and impactful elements to the audience.

My third shot was an over the shoulder shot of a conversation between 2 characters. This shot shows the audience a characters body language and reactions to dialogue being spoken within the conversation and makes the audience feel as if they are included within the conversation. I practiced this shot because this will definitely be used within my project due to the effectiveness and simplicity of the over the shoulder shot.

My fourth shot was a close up of a characters face. The close up puts emphasis on the emotion and reaction that the character is currently experiencing and signifies to the audience that this reaction is an important detail to the story of the film. I used this shot because I think that it will be helpful to use within my short film to better show emotions experienced by characters in my project.

After practicing these 4 shots, I feel more confident in my filming skills and I believe that practicing potential shots that will be used within my project can enhance the overall quality of my project when the time to film it comes around.
