Blog Post #14- Setting Research and Setting decision

All films have a setting where the movie takes place. Since I am creating a short film I decided that I would need to come up with a setting that would be appropriate for my short film that I will create. I decided to research common settings within the coming of age genre since my film is apart of this genre of films. 

The first setting that I found was the setting of an individuals house/bedroom. This is paired with the coming of age genre since the bedroom of an individual is, in most cases the place where they feel most comfortable at. This comfort allows the individual to experience their real emotions and think about the emotions that they may be expressing at the current moment. 

The second setting that I found with my research was high schools. The setting of a high school is used for the coming of age genre because a lot of events that happen to teenagers occur within their school. These events are things such as making friends, having romantic relationships, and experiencing many different emotions.

The third setting that I found with my research was malls. Malls are used as a setting within coming of age films because a majority of teenagers enjoy going to malls. At malls, teenagers also usually socialize which allows the producer to have the ability to portray many different situations regarding the characters within a mall. 

After this research I came up with a decision for what the setting of my film will be. I decided that my film will have the setting of the main characters house. My reasoning for this is the fact that when the main character and his initial friends are hanging out, they will be shown at his house committing illegal actions because of the lack of authority within the house which would not be the case for a public area such as a mall or school. After the hangout session between the main character and his friends, he will then be shown in his bedroom of his own house thinking about his decisions and how he should continue with his life to make sure he doesn't have a rough future. I think that the bedroom will be a great choice for the main character of my film to express his emotions because as I stated above, an individual usually feels most comfortable within their own bedroom.
