Blog post #11- Common genre conventions within coming of age short films
Every film always has certain specific details within it that makes the audience be able to know what genre the film is apart of. Since my genre for my short film is a coming of age one, I have to look into certain elements that I will use within my project for the purpose of providing the audience with details that can tell the audience which genre my short film is a part of.
Coming of age genre short films usually have the protagonist aged around middle to late teenage years. The reason for this is that these late teenage years are where individuals start to realize that they are becoming adults soon and this will come with responsibilities. Characters within coming of age genre films also express many different emotional aspects. This is used within the genre because it shows the thought process and emotions that the characters experience while making decisions that can lead to maturation. Identity crises are also another element that is commonly used within coming of age short films. Identity crises are represented within films by showing characters be confused with who they really are and highlighting insecurities that these characters may feel as well. Comedic elements may also be used within short films. This is usually done for the purpose of enlightening the mood of the audience.
These genre conventions are very important because I will be including most of these genre conventions to ensure that the audience can figure out that the film is a coming of age genre short film. I will also be using these genre conventions to make the execution of the theme within my short film more effective and impactful to the audience. As mentioned before in a previous blog, my characters will all be aged around 15-16 years old and the main characters emotions will be expressed to the audience for the purpose of giving the audience more details about what led to the main characters decisions that would lead him on a path of maturation.
